Is Twitter @replies Notification Back?

in Featured, News ~ tagged: ~

I noticed something funny today on Twitter. My @replies for people I don’t follow are showing up in my @replies page. If you didn’t already know twitter actually turned off this function so you can’t see @replies from people you don’t follow (read more here). They said that most new users never turn on this function, but a lot of people will say otherwise.

Check it out.

I’m not following any of these 4 users but some how they appeared on my @replies page. So I asked a few twitters if its showing for them, some said no, and some like my pal Calvin (mayhemstudios) said yes.

So what does this mean? Well I hope it means they will bringing back @replies for non mutual followers because it rocks! Totally love it because I always its important to connect with people who you don’t follow. I’m only guessing that Twitter is trying to roll out something new with @replies but until they release public information we’re all clueless.

Update 2: Twitter CEO Evan Williams just tweeted about the change: “Reading people’s thoughts on the replies issue. We’re considering alternatives. Thanks for your feedback.”

If you know something feel free to comment below or @reply me.

  • Some interesting observations there. Hopefully someone will design a 3rd party script to combat this issue
  • I really miss the feature, now I have to check search to see if anyone was talking to me I missed.
  • I'm confused. My understanding was your @replies would show up, but you couldn't see if someone you followed replied to someone you don't follow. For example, if I follow Bob, but not Ted, I can't see a message that starts @ted unless I look at Bob's page directly. Am I wrong?
  • No, what this means is if you don't follow TED and TED @replies to you, you won't see his reply. That's what twitter has done. It removed your setting to display all @replies to you. Now its suppose to only show you replies to people that you do follow.

But there's debate because I'm now seeing replies from people I don't follow, so I'm confused about what's really happening.
  • That's not true. They only removed @replies in your stream if you don't follow both people (the person writing it and the person directed at). Your @replies tab was never modified. It still shows all tweets that include @yourusername.
  • Yes that's right they removed it so non mutual follower's can't see each others @replies to them.

Eg I can't see Jacks replies to me because we are both not following each other.

But what's happened is that I can see jacks @replies to me even if we both don't follow each other.

    That's what this is about
  • Are you sure it was in your @replies tab too? I could have sworn it was only in your stream that things got removed. Guess I read it wrong.
